Driving Tests

Posted: February 28, 2013 in Uncategorized

As I was cruising the open roads last night, I was almost hit by another driver. This driver was on the wrong side of the road, and I nearly died in order to avoid them. When I saw their face, they were not scared or upset, they were angry that i was in their way. They even hit the horn. This driver had to be at least 70 years old. It also isn’t the first time that I have almost been run down by an elderly driver, and thinking on that inspired the thought that the state should require another driving test around the age of 65. This test should have to be repeated every 2-4 years, and be required for someone to have a valid license. In my opinion, and in the opinions of many others, this would make for safer roads. The senior citizens who could drive would be able to keep their licenses without a problem, and those that couldn’t would lose the ability to drive and keep the roads safer.  It also serves as an opportunity to keep the roads safer by keeping citizens up to date on laws that can change frequently. Some people may say that this violates the rights of our senior citizens, but there comes a point where we have to compromise for the benefit of all. Is it worth allowing someone who is a danger to everyone to continue to operate a complex machine that can easily injure, if not kill, someone else to continue to operate it? Is that fair to the body of citizens as a whole? While it may be mildly unfair to some, it provides a greater benefit than an inconvenience. I am not calling for a drastic action either, only for people to be tested to see if they are a danger. I think that is reasonable.
